Curtiss P-40 Variants

Testbeds &
Experimentals

This ship was used to test experimental long-range ferry tanks meant for flights
across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. They were never adopted for operational use.

More tank testing. The ship in this photo may be the same as shown above, and is said to be
P-40E-1 41-25094. If so, it's interesting that she appears to carry an Allison V-1710-73, ala the
P-40K. Numerous late-production P-40E/E-1s were equipped with that more powerful engine,
but also had the modified tail of the early P-40Ks. This ship does not have the latter. A small
mystery to unravel someday. If this is indeed 41-25094, she later served at Moore Field, Texas.

In 1942 Curtiss came up with this twin-engined design that never made it past the mock-up
stage. The serial number 41-13456 indicates a P-40C, but the fuselage is clearly that of a
Model 87 variant, probably a P-40F. The engine cowlings are certainly from P-40Fs as well.
