Mahony is said to have flown more missions on more combat tours than any other flyer from
the United States. He fought in the Philipinnes, Java, Australia, China, and Burma, and was
credited with five aerial victories as well as an estimated twenty-five on the ground. In
addition to the 76th FS, he commanded the 17th Pursuit Squadron (Provisional), as well as the
fighter section of the 1st Air Commando Group. Mahony was Deputy Commander of the 8th Fighter
Group, flying P-38s, when he was killed during a strafing run over Palawan on January 3rd, 1945.
