Staff Sgt. Robert G. Davis

Robert G. Davis, served as a Staff Sergeant with the 23rd Pursuit/Fighter Squadron, 36th
Pursuit/Fighter Group in Puerto Rico and later deployed to Europe with the 53rd Fighter
Squadron, 36th Fighter Group, Ninth AF, for combat operations with the Republic P-47.

Another type operated by the 36th while in Puerto Rico was the Bell P-39.
This P-39D, serial number 41-6868, was assigned to the 23rd Fighter Squadron's
commanding officer. After the 36th FG returned to the ZI to train for deployment
to Europe, this ship was destroyed in a crash at New Orleans Army Air Base on
May 31st, 1943. She was at the time being flown by Ray M. Clapp, a pilot with
the 16th Ferrying Squadron, 5th Ferrying Group, flying out of Love Field, Texas.

Here's SSgt. Robert G. Davis, on the left, with a couple'a buddies and one of their
P-47s, bombed up and ready for a mission over France. The 36th entered combat with
the Ninth Air Force roughly a month before Operation Overlord... 'D-Day'... and, as
with many IX AF outfits, moved from England to the Continent during July-August 1944.
