P-40E 41-5664 in the CBI

This P-40E served with the 26th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group during 1942 and possibly
part of 1943. However, I am not entirely sure as to which outfit it was assigned when these
photos were taken by Jack Canary, a North American Aviation Tech Rep who served in the CBI.

I think it was probably serving with the fighter OTU in Karachi, India but am not totally sure.
This OTU was established to provide all fighter pilots coming into the CBI with a few weeks of
specialized theater-relevant training before moving on to their assigned outfits. Similarly, each
of these pilots would serve as instructors for a few weeks before leaving for home at the end of
their tours. The aircraft used by this outfit were almost invariably war-weary ships that had seen
much use for prolonged periods of time, and this particular Hawk undoubtedly fit that description.

These photos come from the Jack Canary Special Collection in the San Diego Air & Space Museum Archives.
