P-40N #40

I've come across conflicting info concerning this Hawk, but here's a caption for the same
photo from the source I trust most: 'Protect & Avenge - The 49th Fighter Group in WWII'.

"New P-40N of 8FS 2Lt Merle Wolfe, aircraft #40 sn 2104977, flown to Marilinan Bay."

(A few parts from this Hawk's wreckage provided the basis for a build project that resulted in the P-40N
currently known as 'American Dream'. A page for that ship will be added to the 'Survivors' section in the future.)

P-40N #46 'Naughty Marietta'

'Naughty Marietta' was flown by Lt. Carl Lambert, who apparently also flew another ship,
#69, which carried wolf artwork, a pinup, and the name 'The Bastard' on the right side of
the nose. Both the artwork and name have also been seen on another ship, #56. Photos
of both #56 and #69 will be included on this page at some point in the future.

P-40N #47 'Mary Lou'

Lt. David R. Winternitz with his P-40N, 'Mary Lou'. Winternitz scored the 49th's 399th
official victory when he knocked down an Oscar on February 14th, 1944 over Wewak.

Laugh-in' 49er

Lt. Dan H. David with his P-40N #49, 'Miss Kathleen II' at Marilinan Airfield, Papua, NG,
late 1943. Lt. David would later gain great fame as co-host of the late 1960s early
1970s comedy TV show 'Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In' under the stage name Dan Rowan.
