Foggy Hawks

Fog provides an eerie backdrop for this photo of two 344th FS P-40Ks at Alexai Point
Airbase on Attu Island, September 27th, 1943. The fog was an ever-present menace.

This ship looks to be P-40K 42-46315.

Pranged Hawk

P-40K 42-46169 came to grief upon landing at Shemya on September 25th, 1944.
The pilot was Lt. Rowland A. Turney, and the ship was written off that same day.
Of particular interest is the carburetor intake grill forward of the exhausts; this
was something that generally appeared only on the P-40M, N, and the P-40R.

And here she is, in happier days...

Rowland's Hawk

Lt. Turney's assigned ship... not sure if this is 42-46169 or who the fella is. Could be
Lt. Turney, SSgt Yankowski, or someone else entirely. Please give a yell if you recognize him.

I was contacted by David Lay who suggested that it may be Lt. Turney, based on a photo that's
included on his Find a Grave Memorial Page. I would be inclined to agree. Thanks muchly, David.

Who's a good girl...?

Unlike the fella in the last photo, this member of the 344th has been positively
identified... her name was 'Lessie'. We know 'cuz it's written on the back of the photo.
