Broken Hawk

On April 12th, 1942 two ships from the 58th PS, P-40E-1 41-25116, flown by 2Lt. James C. Reed,
and P-40E-1 41-25118, flown by Lt. James G. Curl, were involved in a midair collision near the
airport at Elizabeth City, VA. As can be seen, 2Lt. Reed was able to make a forced landing near
the airport, but Lt. Curl bailed out over Davis Bay on the Pasquotank River. Curl went on to
command the 66th FS, 57th FG, then the 2nd FS, 52nd FG and was KIA in March of 1945.
